His right hand is at his hip, the left holding a wooden chair back. Phillips is dressed in a dark jacket over a plaid waistcoat and trousers with a wide stripe. Arched gold surround, inscribed below in gold: 'Photographed by MAULL & POLYBLANK, 55, Gracechurch Street and 187A Piccadilly, London.' Signed below in ink 'John Phillips 27 June 1860'.
